Understanding Skin Pigmentation
Skin pigmentation disorders are among the most common dermatological concerns in India, affecting people of all ages and skin types. Pigmentation occurs when melanin โ the pigment responsible for skin colour โ is produced unevenly, leading to dark patches, spots, or an overall dull, uneven complexion. In Indian skin tones (Fitzpatrick types III-V), pigmentation tends to be more visible and persistent.
India's intense sun exposure, combined with pollution, hormonal changes, and the widespread use of skin-lightening products, makes pigmentation particularly prevalent. Unlike superficial blemishes, deep pigmentation requires professional dermatological treatment to address the root cause. Self-medication or using unregulated products can worsen the condition and cause permanent damage to the skin.
