Understanding Eczema & Dermatitis
Eczema, clinically known as dermatitis, is a group of inflammatory skin conditions that cause the skin to become red, itchy, dry, and irritated. It affects an estimated 10-20% of children and 3-7% of adults in India, making it one of the most common reasons for dermatology visits. The hallmark of eczema is the intense itching that often disrupts sleep, concentration, and daily activities.
Unlike a temporary rash, eczema is a chronic condition rooted in a combination of genetic factors, immune system overreactivity, and environmental triggers. In people with eczema, the skin barrier โ which normally locks in moisture and keeps out irritants โ is compromised. This means the skin loses water rapidly, becomes dry, and is more vulnerable to allergens, bacteria, and irritants that penetrate deeper and trigger inflammation.
India's climate presents unique challenges for eczema patients. The extreme heat and humidity in summer cause excessive sweating that irritates sensitive skin, while dry winter air strips moisture from the already compromised skin barrier. Air pollution in major Indian cities adds another layer of aggravation. Understanding these triggers and working with a dermatologist to develop a proactive management plan is the key to long-term control.
